Up 81.3% in five years. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 population estimates put Triana at 5,244 residents on July 1, 2025, up 81.3% from its 2020 estimates base. That is the fastest growth of any Huntsville-area place this site covers, and the Census now lists it as “Triana city.”

The growth is new, but the town is not. Triana was incorporated on November 13, 1819, as Madison County’s second town. It worked as a river port shipping cotton before railroads took that trade, then was re-chartered on July 13, 1964, under Mayor Clyde Foster. Today it is a Madison County city, and most of its homes are recent.

What newer housing means for mold

The Census Bureau’s ACS 2024 5-year estimates give Triana a median year built of 2013, the newest of the places this site covers. That figure rests on a small number of homes, so treat it as a rough guide. About 83.8% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.

New construction shifts the usual mold questions. Problems tend to come from a specific moisture source rather than general age: a slow supply-line leak behind a wall, a roof or window flashing detail, an air handler sweating in a humid attic, or a crawl space without full vapor control. North Alabama summer dew points average about 66–70 °F, which is muggy air that can condense on cool surfaces.

Crawl spaces deserve a look too. In the Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee census division, 42.2% of new single-family homes started in 2021 had a crawl space, compared with about 9–11% nationally.

A simple plan if you notice mold or a musty smell

  1. Stop the water

Fix the leak or dry the area. EPA says to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth.

  2. Size it up

EPA says a homeowner can usually handle an area smaller than about 10 square feet. Larger growth calls for a professional, and so does mold removal inside walls.

  3. Check under and over the house

Ask about the crawl space and the attic. In newer homes those are often where hidden moisture starts.

  4. Compare written quotes

Ask each company to name the moisture source, the containment plan and the materials it will remove. Our cost guide lists typical national ranges.

If anyone in the home has asthma, allergies or breathing problems, ADPH notes they may be more sensitive and should not clean moldy materials. Talk to a doctor about health concerns.

Triana mold FAQ

Can a brand-new Triana home get mold?

Yes. Mold needs moisture, not age. A plumbing leak, a roof flashing gap, a clogged AC condensate line or a damp crawl space can affect a home built last year. EPA notes that if you clean up mold but don’t fix the water problem, the mold will most likely come back, so any quote should name the moisture source as well as the cleanup.

Should I get a mold test before buying in Triana?

Testing is usually not the right first step. ADPH states, “Testing for molds is not recommended,” and EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary when mold is visible. A moisture-focused inspection of the crawl space, attic and HVAC is often more useful to a buyer. Typical national inspection ranges are $450–$800, an estimate rather than a quote.

Who regulates mold companies working in Triana?

No state agency does. ADPH says Alabama has no laws on mold standards or testing and no certification for mold contractors. ADPH suggests looking for IICRC-certified firms; ask any company for its training and certifications, insurance, and an HBLB license number for rebuild work over $10,000. This is general information, not legal advice.
